You have probably heard a lot about the greenhouse effect, but maybe the concept remains a little fuzzy in your consciousness. So what exactly is this so-called greenhouse effect and what does it mean for you and the future of this planet? The greenhouse effect simply refers to a natural process that is part of the earth. However, because of the devastating effects wrought by global warming, the greenhouse effect has received a very bad reputation in recent years. With over 150 years of industrialization under our belt, the greenhouse effect has gradually become a menacing prospect.

First, it should be understood that the greenhouse effect is not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, the greenhouse effect is a natural process that is necessary in order to sustain life on earth. Basically, life on earth is sustained on planet earth by energy received from the sun. However, much of the sun that is reflected onto our planet is being deflected off the planet and scattered back across space—at least 30 percent of sunlight is beamed out into space to be exact. The rest of the this sunlight eventually reaches the surface of earth, but is then reflected back up to the atmosphere again as a very slow energy known as infrared radiation.

The infrared radiation that is not carried away by air currents is absorbed by greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, ozone, and water vapor. This helps to slow its escape way from the earth's atmosphere. Only about one percent of the earth's atmosphere is made up by greenhouse gases. However, they are very necessary in order to regulate the earth's climate. These natural greenhouse gases help keep the earth warm enough to sustain life. However, what happens when too many greenhouse gases are released into the earth's atmosphere?

When too many greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere, global warming occurs. Although the greenhouse effect is certainly a necessary and very essential part of our earth's environment if it is to sustain human life, too much of it and there is trouble. This happens when human activity produces too many greenhouse gases and releases them into the atmosphere. Many human activities just create too much activity, many more greenhouse gases than the earth can possibly sustain.

What are some of the most common human activities that can result in global warming, and which have become responsible for the global climate change that we are currently experiencing? The most common human activities that are the most responsible for the effects of global warming include the burning of natural gas, oil and coal. This includes the gasoline that helps run your automobile.

Another common activity that can be responsible for too many greenhouse gases being released into the atmosphere include many common farming practices and land use changes. Deforestation is one of the major causes for global warming because trees help to absorb many of the greenhouse gases released by the human activity. However, deforestation means that many important allies—trees—are no longer around to help absorb excess gases. Another factor is population growth, which is also responsible for the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Population growth is a major factor because it means more people are burning fossil fuels and releasing greenhouse gases into the environment. Also, population growth has caused increased farming, which has also helped increase the effects of global warming.

Green Computing as it is effectively called is something we as computer users need to implement in our time spent on Computers, whether it be for short periods of time or long periods of time, there is always something you can do to make it a Green visit!

1) Make sure you make full use of the Windows Power Save features. These can be found by right clicking anywhere on your desktop and selecting 'Properties' which will take you to the Display Properties menu. From here there are numerous tabs, click the tab entitled 'Screensaver' which will take you to the screensaver menu. At the bottom, there will be a box called 'Monitor Power' which will have a message along the lines of 'To adjust monitor power settings and save energy, click power.'

The power button is located next to the box, and you should do what it says and click it. From here you will find many easy to use tabs and options, every one of which will play some part depending on your personal preference to save electricity and keep to the rule of Green Computing. The most important feature there is the 'Turn off Monitor' option which effectively saves power if you are away for a short period of time.

The other important option is Hibernation mode, which shuts down your computer, but saves it specifically the way you left it. So when you choose to release it from its hibernation state, you will be returned to your computer EXACTLY as you left it. This is best used when downloading and especially effective on a Laptop when you are running low on battery but do not want to lose your state, whether it is an article or download. This when put into effect, puts your laptop into a safe state to Charge your battery, while continuing your Article or Download actively open.

2) The second best way to conserve energy is quite simple. When your computer is not in use, simply turn it off via shut down instead of using the Standby or Hibernation features for prolonged amounts of time. These forms still use a certain amount of energy which is unnecessary when your computer is not being used. This is an obvious solution to green computing, but is often replaced by unnecessary Standbys and Hibernation's.

3) Turn off your hardware! Whether it is your printer, scanner or webcam. Each of these continues to use electricity when they are left switched on when they are not in use, so always be sure to turn these off when you are done using them.

4) Shut your Computer down, and then turn the switch off at the mains. If you have an infrared Mouse, your mouse will continue to light up as will certain webcams, which not only uses unnecessary energy, but can be a pain if you are trying to sleep! Be sure if you are trying to get into a green environment, this is the simplest step to take into consideration and the easiest to get into effect. You would be very surprised by the amount of money and energy my family has saved by using this simple technique!

Do your homework about the company. Even if you are a Computer Science major that just got a possible internship at Chanel, you need to know the products. You will need to know the clientele, and what the interviewer wants the intern to do. Knowing terms that they may use that most people might not be familiar with will definitely impress most future bosses. Business majors looking to work with a company on Wall Street should study up on how the business is doing on the stock trade, as well as how its competitors are doing. Fashion majors need to know who they are designing for. Software engineering majors need to know who the clients of the company usually are, et cetera.

The first thing your future boss will notice when you walk through that door is, well, you. Pay attention to how you look when you go to that inteview.
